Sparring as Socialization

Sparring is a natural behavior for African elephants, which allows them to test one another’s strength through playful pushing and trunk entwinement. This is a natural behavior for both males and females and is considered both healthy and productive social interaction.

Flora, who Caregivers characterize as being the strongest-willed member of The Sanctuary's Africa herd, is gentle with Sukari as they play. Sparring is a way for the two to communicate with each other, socialize, and release playful energy.

Tange sometimes stands nearby as if to referee...but often just chooses to nap instead.

Happy Birthday, Sissy and Minnie!

The Sanctuary celebrated the birthdays of two Asian elephants in January! Sissy, who retired to The Sanctuary in 2000, turned 52 on January 26 and Minnie, who retired in 2006, turned 54 on January 31.

She also seems to find joy in the little things, like waking up from a nap and reuniting with Shirley and Tarra or coming back to the barn after spending some time outside.”
